Vai Beach

Vai Beach

Vai is mostly known for its palm forest; a native colony of palm trees situated right next to the beach. It doesn’t get more exotic than that. Actually, it is rare in the Mediterranean world.

Vai is located at the farthest corner of the island (to the east), 95 km east of Agios Nikolaos and 25 km east of Sitia. The beach can be accessed via a short footpath (just 10 minutes’ walk) that starts in Vai and circles the hill. The beach is called Psili Ammos which means “fine sand”. It is not very large but it is really unique. The waters have a blue-green color and are crystal clear. Vai was discovered by the hippies who were searching for a new sanctuary after they had been thrown away from Matala (South Heraklion). Do not expect to find taverns, cafés or hotels at Vai, since the area is protected due to the rare palm forest. There is a canteen though for refreshments or snacks. Anything else you should bring with you.
